Sometimes, heroes need saving too.

Firefighter Richard Conejo fell into depression after a fellow firefighter, Glenn Allen, perished in a blaze at a Hollywood Hills home almost a year ago.

"I had nightmares and could hardly eat," Conejo said.

The men had been standing only a few feet apart when the ceiling collapsed on Allen. Conejo performed CPR but the 61-year-old veteran died days later, just missing the birth of his first grandchild.

It was all too much for Conejo, 36, particularly the thought of how he himself barely escaped. He and his wife had been planning to start a family.

"When I got home, that's what made me break down and cry," Conejo said.

That's when the Los Angeles County Fire Department's peer support program jumps in.

Over the past 25 years, specially trained firefighters have helped their "brothers" handle the strain inevitable in a job that requires rushing into burning buildings, hanging from helicopters to pluck people out of swollen rivers, and prying open train wrecks to look for survivors.

"Firefighters are this macho crew who think, `We've got to be tough,' but the bottom line is we're all human," said fire Capt. Scott Ross, a team leader in the program who reached out to the despondent Conejo.

"The stuff that we see on a daily basis, all the tragedy and suffering, it can be overwhelming," Ross added. "There's a breaking point in everybody."

About 60 firefighters volunteer to help colleagues shaken by a particularly harrowing incident, like the death of a child.

"We definitely look out for our brothers," said fire engineer/paramedic Dan Timboe, another team leader on the program, which does not provide any extra pay.

Some firefighters experience a form of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. Others complain of being burned out and stop going to work.

And then there are those who resort to alcohol, drugs or gambling to numb the pain, and those who take out their frustrations on their families, or act distant and isolated from them.

Firefighters have one of the highest rates of divorce of any profession in the country.

"We're not counselors," Timboe said. "But because we're firemen, they're more willing to talk to us than to a total stranger."

Many members of the peer support program have endured crises themselves.

Ross helped recover the body of his son's girlfriend after she fell overboard during a boating accident in Arizona. He had watched the teenager grow up and considered her a member of the family.

Timboe is the designated team leader for cases involving alcohol abuse, because he himself used to drink, many years ago.

Most of the time, they are able to ease their fellow firefighters' stress by simply meeting with them over coffee, letting them vent, and talking about their own struggles and how they overcame it.

Occasionally, however, they recommend a call to mental health professionals who contract with the LACoFD.

Marriage and family therapist Steve Froehlich said without the intervention of the peer support program, firefighters might never go to him for the help they need.

"As a group, firefighters are psychologically very, very hardy and resilient, ... much more quick to step up to help somebody else rather than themselves," Froehlich said. "What makes this program incredibly valuable is that a first responder might not be comfortable talking to a mental health professional, but a peer supporter can change their mind by giving that professional their seal of approval."

LACoFD created the peer support program after the 1986 Cerritos air disaster, when a small plane and an airliner collided in midair and crashed into a residential neighborhood.

All 67 people aboard both aircraft and 15 others on the ground were killed.

Ten of the dead were children.

"Firefighters were exposed to all this carnage on the streets, and we noticed its emotional effect on them was not going away," said Assistant Chief Gerald Heinzel, the department's current peer support coordinator.

"By introducing some peer supporters and mental health professionals to let the firefighters talk about what they experienced, and the frustration they felt, we were able to bring them back to normalcy."

Heinzel said the program gets about 200 to 600 referrals a year. Sometimes firefighters seek out the help themselves. Often, however, their spouse or fellow firefighters make the call on their behalf.

The department also proactively deploys teams to particularly sensitive incidents, so they can be on the scene to offer help when asked. They never force the intervention.

The teams were summoned to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and have also offered advice to local municipal fire departments.

They were particularly needed when fire Capt. Ted Hall and firefighter specialist Arnie Quinones were killed during the Station Fire in 2008. The men were well known in the department, having served for a combined 35 years in about a dozen fire stations.

Ross welcomed the phone calls, even those that came in the middle of the night.

"We get up for the public 24/7," he said. "I most certainly am not going to have a problem with a firefighter calling me. I'm here for them, any time."

The program is not always successful. Some firefighters rebuff offers of help and end up quitting to avoid the stress, or being terminated because they cannot stay sober on the job.

There also have been rare cases of suicide.

Ross met Conejo at the hospital where the latter underwent a checkup after the Hollywood Hills house fire. Conejo lost 15 pounds over the span of a month while struggling to come to terms with what happened, but Ross and other firefighters eventually pulled him through.

Conejo and his wife are now expecting their first child. He has applied to join the peer support program, which is holding a recruitment drive to boost the number of its volunteers to 100.

"They helped me out a lot, and if I can give that same comfort and solace to somebody else, that's something I have to do," he said. "I think it's my duty as a fireman."

CFD To Get New Headquarters!

Mayor Joe Riley announced this week during his State of the City address that the Charleston Fire Department will be getting a new Headquarters Fire Station on the site of the old Station 9 at the corner of King and Heriot Streets in the upper penisular. Plans call for the new building to house two engine companies and the CFD Hazardous Materials response units.

This past week, one of our own, Battalion Chief John Winn, was hospitalized and now must face some uncertain times as he begins his journey to beat his illness. As I visited him in the hospital, I stood in line outside of his room to get my opportunity to visit with him and Debbie. There were so many firefighters and supporters there that we actually took turns going in to his room. One of the nurses approached me and said that she had never seen so many visitors for one person. I told her that first, that was John Winn in there and once she got to know him, she would understand why so many were there. I also asked her if she had ever had a firefighter under her care and she said “no”. Well, I told her that if she ever did again, she would see another large group of people because firefighters looked at life a little differently. She said it was an amazing thing to see and she was truly touched.

Well, as we all expected, Chief Winn took the news of his illness with the spirit to do whatever he has to do to beat it. In his normal fashion, he continues to worry more about his family and his firefighters than himself and plans on returning to duty next week. Rest assured, Chief John and Debbie, that the support shown by all the firefighters last week will continue to follow you both in the coming weeks and months.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Capt. Richard Ridge, CFD Retired. Capt. Ridge passed away this evening at the Hospice Center in Mount Pleasant after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a true friend to all who knew him and we are all better for having him in our lives. Please keep his wife, Maggie and his daughters, Kellen, Heather, and Candice in your thoughts and prayers. Funeral arrangements will be announced later this week.

A Mystery Solved...........

For some time now, there has been a photo hanging in Fire Department Headquarters of an early CFD Chief's car. The identity of the two occupants of the car, obviously a Chief Officer and a driver, were unknown until recently when I recognized the driver as Charles Pequette, a member in the fire department who, until becoming the Chief's driver, was an active leader of the truck company, located on John Street in those days. I had seen his photograph in some of the truck company photos with his name listed. The mystery remained as to who the Chief Officer was until today, when my son, Grant Mishoe, of SCOnFire, provided us with his research on the subject.

On July 17, 1915, the Chief's car, being driven by Chauffeur Pequette, was enroute to a fire at Box No. 454 on the corner of Coming and Montague Street. Asst. Chief Michael J. Morris was riding on the passenger side when they collided with a City of Charleston Police car at the corner of Calhoun Street and St. Phillip Street. Chauffeur Pequette was thrown from the vehicle and suffered a severe skull fracture. Chief Morris was pinned under the dash and died from his injuries. In addition, several police officers were injured in the collision.

Grant was able to get a copy of Chief Morris' death certificate documenting his cause of death as well as the photo of the wrecked Chief's car. Special thanks to him for his work in solving this mystery for us.

Apartment Fire in North Charleston!

North Charleston firefighters responded to an apartment fire on Rolling Fork Road on Tuesday afternoon. Upon arrival they found heavy fire and smoke conditions in a single building housing four different apartments. The first-in crews mounted an aggressive interior attack until aerial apparatus were in place. Command then changed over to an equally aggressive defensive attack that stopped the fire in its tracks.

The North Chuck crews were backed up by units from Charleston, St. Andrews and James Island. Nice work by the Command, Safety, Accountability and Staging officers ensured a safe and orderly operation. A small pup was rescued by fire crews and is recovering in a local animal hospital. Thankfully, no one else was injured.

"Engine 61" to Ride Again!

We have been fortunate to work out an arrangement with CFD Local 61 to acquire their old 1958 Mack B Model fire engine. It had been a part of the union for many years and up until the early 2000's was active in their program. It has been sitting up for several years and we will restore it and return it to duty in the CFD as part of our program and to recognize the contributions of all Local 61 members over the years.

As all of you know who follow our Team, we always give our vehicles a name or number to perpetuate their history and to give them a special identity in their work in our Team. "Engine 8", "Engine 11", "Big Red", and the "Never Forget" Camaro are all examples. We believe it is fitting to call this old Mack "Engine 61" in honor of Local 61, one of the oldest Locals of the International Association of Firefighters. We hope you all agree and will follow our progress as we begin this restoration.

Fire On Nunan Street!

Crews from Charleston, North Charleston, St. Andrews and James Island were called into town today for a fire on Nunan Street involving three houses. Fire began in an abandoned structure and quickly spread to the adjacent exposures before being stopped "dead in its' tracks" with an aggressive attack by "C" Shift, 3rd Battalion personnel backed up by our brothers and sisters from the other departments.

The Brotherhood

Some will say that “The Brotherhood” no longer exists in the Fire Service, but, my friends, it is alive and well in the Charleston Fire Department. Yes, we have our disagreements and sometimes we don’t even like one another very well, but when the times get tough, you all rise to the challenge, are there for one another, and truly show what “brotherhood” is all about. Brotherhood, you see, is not something you get with the badge, or is it issued with your uniforms. You must pay it forward and invest in each other in order to truly experience what is all about. Whether it is a trip out-of-town to pay your respects to another firefighter in a different state, attending the funeral of one of our own, packing a hospital waiting room in support of a brother and his family, or simply helping a brother clean up his yard when he is ill, it is, and will always be about the brotherhood. For any who don’t think it exists, look around you. You may be pleasantly surprised. Stand proud my friends, there is much to do in the future and the brotherhood cannot be taken away.

The past two weeks have been filled with a lot of holidays events and we have had great fun being a part of it! On December 1st, we participated in the Harleyville night time Christmas Parade where we unexpectedly won the second place trophy in the Fire Department Division. On Sunday, December 4th, we enjoyed a great time in the annual Christmas Parade with our Fire Department Kids. Our CFD Retirees' "Hooked Up" Christmas Program was held on Thursday, December 8th and over seventy folks brought toys to support the Salvation Army Toy Drive. They were treated to a delicious meal and an interesting program entitled "The Traditions and History of Christmas in Charleston", presented by Leigh Mishoe, of Sandlapper Water Tours. We followed that on Friday, December 9th, with the MUSC Employees' "Debi Kids" Toy Drive and Parade where we were honored to have the Grand Marshal and his family riding on Engine 11 with us. Saturday, December 10th, brought us to the St. Andrews Firefighter Community Assistance Fund Event to raise money for SAFCAF and the Carolina Children's Charity with "Photos with Santa" and a great pancake breakfast at Outback Steakhouse, West of the Ashley. We concluded our run today with the Summerville Christmas Parade. Special thanks to Capt. Demeail Seabrook and my daughter, Leigh, for handling some of the driving duties so we could get all of our big toys in the show. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this an amazing start to the holidays!

Today, a group of CFD members, led by Battalion Chief John Winn, traveled out to Adams Run to spend the morning with Captain Richard Ridge, CFD Retired, and his wife Maggie. Captain Ridge has been quite ill and it was great to visit with them. We spent the morning helping them clean their yard to get them ready for the holidays. Around midday, we were treated to our own tailgate party as Assistant Chief Robbie O'Donald and his sons served up a great barbeque lunch to us all.

Captain Richard and Maggie wish to express their sincere gratitude for all who came out today and, our behalf of all of us there, we thank them for giving us the opportunity to get together with them to share in a special time.

Our Team Trains with Salisbury Fire Department!

Five members of the Charleston Firefighter Support Team traveled to the Salisbury, North Carolina Fire Department on Tuesday of this week to present a three day training program for the newly formed Peer Counseling Team in the SFD. Our relationship began with the SFD in 2008 after they lost two firefighters in March, 2008 in a cabinet manufacturing warehouse. Our Team members have made several trips to Salisbury and members of their department have visited and trained with us in Charleston since that time.

Christopher Wells, our Peer Counselor clinician, John Winn, Sr., Bryan Kleskie, and Demeail Seabrook, Peer Counselors on our Team, and Richie Denninger, our former Peer Supervisor, made up the group that presented the training. Special thanks to all of these men for "making us proud".

On behalf of all of them and our entire Team, we thank Chief Bob Parnell and his entire department of their hospitality shown to our folks while in Salisbury. We are looking forward to continuing our relationship with the SFD folks as both of our Teams continue to grow.

A Celebration on the High Battery!

Today, we were honored to be a part of the wedding day of Easley firefighter Pierce Womack and his bride Kristin. They were married in a ceremony at the Palmer House on the High Battery and we rode the bride and groom around the Battery on Engine 11 after the ceremony. Pierce is the son of Easley Fire Chief Butch Womack. Chief Womack is a Past President of the South Carolina State Firefighters' Association and an avid supporter of our Team. We were happy to be able to help make Pierce and Kristin's day special and to show our appreciation for Chief Womack's unwaverly support of the Charleston Fire Department.

The Charleston Firefighter Support Team, along with the CFD Wives' Club and the CFD Retirees' Program members, is moving along with our preparations for a special entry in the Annual Charleston Christmas Parade, being held on December 4 this year. We have secured the reservation for our parade float to be titled "Celebrating Our Fire Department Children" and invite all of our CFD children to join us to ride on the float in the parade. This idea came from our desire to do something special for our fire department children this year and this parade is always a highlight of the holiday season for our community. We will have our Team's Engine 11 and Engine 8 escorting the float to give us additional room to accommodate all who wish to participate with us. We are asking that all of the children be dressed in something red such as a shirt, blouse, jacket or sweater to add to the holiday theme. Parents are invited to ride with their children, as space permits, or to walk along beside with our Team members. The Passing of a Brother...........

It is with sadness that we inform you that CFD Retired Engineer Henry Snyder passed away on October 12, 2011. Engineer Snyder was hired with the CFD on April 2, 1968, promoted to 3rd Driver on May 4, 1973, and then to Engineer on December 27, 1975. He was assigned to Tower 105 in the "Truck House" on Coming Street where he drove for Captain Raymond Simmons. Engineer Snyder retired on April 22, 1994.

The wake will be held at Bethel AME Church located at 464 Society Road in McClellanville on Monday, October 17, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.. The funeral service will be conducted at Bethel Church on Tuesday, October 18, beginning at 1:00 p.m., will full Fire Department honors.

Any fire department member available is requested to attend either of the services in recognition of Engineer Snyder's service as a City of Charleston firefighter. Personnel should wear their Class A uniform as a sign of respect for his years of service.

Getting It Done in the City!

Charleston firefighters responded to a house fire this afternoon on Amherst Street downtown. First arriving units found heavy fire and smoke in a two story wood frame house with exposures on the B & D sides. I was on Savannah Highway, West of the Ashley, and watched the smoke as I drove downtown. Using my best training and memories of the old days, I listened to the radio and watched the smoke and I could tell they were getting the job done. Well, when I finally made it there, it was obvious they had just plain "opened up a can of whoop ass" on it. Sorry folks, that's simply what came to my mind. They laid into it with "big water" and made short work of it. Nice job guys and thanks to St. Andrews Rescue 301 for the back-up!

We're Excited! - Fire Prevention Week Starts Saturday!

Fire Prevention Week kicks off with a bang on Saturday with the Charleston parade. Here is a list of all activities that we know of for the week for all those interested:

Oct. 8th - Charleston Fire Dept. parade - Line-up at 9 a.m. on Horizon Street behind the Charleston PD Headquarters. Parade will begin @ 10 a.m. and end at Lockwood and Spring Street.

Oct. 13th - James Island Public Service District Fire Dept. Expo - This event will be held in the parking lot of the James Island Lowes at 770 Daniel Ellis Drive, from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m.

The Charleston Fire Department Wives' Club is having a yard sale to raise money for future Club events on Saturday, October 8th, at the Salvation Army Worship Center located at 2135 Ashley River Road, West of the Ashley. Today was quite a day as we took part in the arrival of the "Pink Heals" Tour as they rolled into town. We started out about 8:00 a.m. with Engine 8 and our Fire Chief's car, on a drive from Summerville via Highway 17-A through Moncks Corner and on to Jamestown. From there, we followed Highway 45 through the Francis Marion Forest to McClellanville where we picked up the pink trucks and escorted them into Charleston and a stop at MUSC. Later in the afternoon, we joined them at Park Circle in North Charleston with an enthusiastic crowd of supporters. Thanks to Allen Duke, the Red Knights Motorcycle Club, the "Pink Heals" folks, the Women Firefighters of the Lowcountry, and all the other firefighters and people who let us share the great day with them.

We have completed Engine 8 and she will make her first official appearance for our Team this coming week as part of the escort for the "Pink Heals Tour" as they arrive in town. We will meet them in McClellanville at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning and escort them to the MUSC Horseshoe where they will be part of the MUSC Health Fair. Later in the afternoon, it's on to Park Circle in North Charleston for another appearance with the pink fire engines starting at 3:00 pm. before we wind up the day with them at a stop at the Market Street Grill in Northwoods Mall from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Should be a great day. Come out and join us!

On Saturday, September 10, 2011, the St. Andrews Firefighters' Community Assistance Fund will hold their first block party to raise funds for their cause. This party will be held in the Avondale business district at Magnolia Road and Savannah Highway, West of the Ashley. The party will include a silent auction, jump castle, dunkin' booth, and fire trucks for the children, big and little.

SAFCAF is a 501 (3)(c) tax exempt foundation whose mission is to provide residents or organizations with financial or volunteer assistance as needed. This block party will be SAFCAF's first big fundraiser and promises to be a day of fun for all. In addition, many of the Avondale merchants and restaurants will be offering a 10% discount on purchases during the day. Plan to come out and join them for live music and entertainment for the entire family!

Tennessee Fire Chief to Head S.C. Fire Academy

Chief Shane Ray of Pleasant View, Tennessee, has been named the new Superintendent of the South Carolina Fire Academy. He will begin work October 3, 2011.

“I look forward to the opportunities and challenges of this position and am excited to join the South Carolina team,” Ray said. “My passion for fire service training is long standing, and I believe we can work together to continue and advance fire service training in South Carolina.”

The Fire Academy’s mission is to provide statewide training for South Carolina fire service personnel: paid, volunteer, airport crash rescue firefighters, industrial fire brigade and other emergency response personnel. The Fire Academy provides basic and advanced training for firefighters, fire officers, instructors and fire department support functions, which include public fire education, fire prevention, inspections and fire investigations.

Chief Ray began his fire service career in 1984 and worked through the ranks of career and volunteer organizations serving from firefighter to chief. He also served six years as Mayor of the Town of Pleasant View. Ray currently serves as Chief of the Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department and as Associate Director of Public Fire Protection for the National Fire Sprinkler Association.

“We are excited for Chief Ray to join our team in South Carolina,” S.C. State Fire Marshal Adolf Zubia said. “South Carolina firefighters are anxious to welcome him and look forward to his innovative training ideas that will help South Carolina lead the nation in training.”

Chief Ray is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government fellowship program, the University of Maryland’s Leadership Development Program, and the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program. He was selected as Fire Chief Magazine’s Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year for 2005, Eastern Kentucky University’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year award for 2006, and is the Tennessee Fire Chief of the Year 2011.

Chief Ray currently serves as Chairman of the Tennessee Fire Chief’s Legislative Committee, Chairman of the Tennessee Fire Service Coalition, and is International Director for the Volunteer & Combination Officers Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

I was blessed to be born a firefighter's child in Conway, South Carolina. One of the fondest memories of my childhood was when we would ride on the fire truck in the town's Christmas parade. Well, today we are excited to announce our “Celebrating Our Fire Department Kids” theme for the Christmas parade in downtown Charleston on December 4, 2011. We are inviting all of our CFD kids to join us in the parade by riding on our float or one of our fire trucks. Our Firefighter Support Team is pleased to co-sponsor this event with the Charleston Firefighters' Local 61, the CFD Wives’ Club and the CFD Retirees’ Group. Visitation for Chief Cauthen will be held on Thursday evening, August 18, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the Lancaster Funeral Home in Lancaster, South Carolina. Lynda Hardwick, wife of JIFD Engineer James Yetman recently founded James Island Fire Alliance, Inc., a non-profit organization "creating a fire-safe community" whose mission is to promote public education and awareness of fire prevention and safety as well as assist the firefighting efforts of the JIFD.

JIFD Captain Jason Moore is president of JIFA and takes a very active role in working with the Founder and Board to promote this valuable addition to our community. He is also the instructor for the new fire prevention and safety class scheduled to begin on August 7, 2011.

The Fire Alliance has scheduled the first two sessions of it's free fire prevention and safety class. This class is open to the public free of charge and covers fire safety equipment, home inspections, 911 calls, cooking hazards and fire and smoke's chemical hazards. "Pink Heals" Tour to Return in September!

The "Pink Heals" tour is scheduled to return to Charleston on September 27 with an escorted ride by the Red Knights Motorcycle Club and area fire departments that will begin in Awendaw and stop at the Medical University and other venues during the day. Our most recent addition to the Team is Engine 8, a 1976 American LaFrance Century, 1250 gpm pumper. It was originally purchased by the North Charleston District Fire Department in 1976 and served there until 2003 when it was acquired by the C & B Fire Department. Many thanks to our friends at C & B for making it available to us!

We will use it in our public outreach/educational programs to supplement our flagship, Engine 11, as we work to continue to support our firefighters and their families. It gets its' nickname "The Bullet" from its' ability to really "tote the mail", if you know what we mean!! Keep an eye out for it to be roamng the streets soon!

It is great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our friend, Chris Harmon, today in Columbia. Many of you probably didn't know Chris personally as he was the husband of our own Zorrina Harmon, the membership benefits and insurance coordinator for our South Carolina State Firefighters' Association. Zorrina was instrumental in the initial response to our loss of the Charleston 9 and remained in Charleston for several months in the summer of 2007 making sure the families of the 9 were taken care of and helping with the organization of our Team and the establishment of the CFD counseling unit. Chris visited many times and always supported Zorrina in her work with us and all firefighters in our State. Chris was 41 years of age and is survived by Zorrina, their three children, and a large extended family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Zorrina and the Harmon family during this very difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be announced later this week.

Engine 8 Comes Home! Well Almost!

Last week, we acquired a 1976 American LaFrance Century pumper to add to our collection of vehicles. This old engine has personal significance to me in that it was the first new vehicle purchased by the North Charleston District Fire Department in 1976 shortly after I joined the District as an Assistant Chief. It was purchased along with a 1976 American LaFrance 100' rear mount aerial ladder and was the pride of our fleet in those days. It roamed the streets of North Charleston, manned by a host of great firefighters, who kicked butt and took names, until it was transferred to the C & B Fire Department in Ladson in 2003. Many thanks to the C & B Board of Directors for making it available to us, and to Chief Troy Williams and all of our friends at C & B for taking great care of her. We will be sure that she continues to represent all of you as she joins our other vehicles in our public outreach and education programs.

Story of the "Wear Red for the 9" T-Shirts

We are extremely appreciative of all of our friends who have supported our “Wear Red for the 9” campaign by purchasing the Charleston 9 t-shirts from us. I thought it appropriate, as we approach June 18, to tell you the story of how these shirts came about. The shirts were first designed by Mikey Frenchie’s uncle, Legrand Campbell, prior to last year‘s Charleston 9 Memorial. After some discussions with Diane French, Mikey’s mother, Legrand agreed to allow Diane to print an adaptation of his original design. Diane had about twenty dozen printed two weeks prior to last year’s memorial and sold out quickly. She and her family asked our Team if we would take over the project and work with them to continue it. The intent of this effort is, and has always been, to continue to honor the 9 and we have been blessed to receive the support of lots of people who share that vision. In addition to honoring the 9 by wearing these shirts, we use the proceeds from their sale to continue to help support training programs and activities of our Team as we feel that is another appropriate way to honor the 9.

We would like to take this opportunity to, once again, thank all of you for your support of our program and our Team and to especially thank Legrand Campbell and Diane French for their vision in starting this project.

I received a phone call this evening from Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire Department Captain Nick Juliano's wife, Julia, who wanted to express their sincere thanks to our CFD family for supporting them during their stay at MUSC. As previously reported here, Capt Nick suffered a heart attack while fighting an apartment fire on June 4, 2011. He has made amazing progress and was discharged today to return home where he continues to recuperate. We wish them all the best as we keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

I had the opportunity to see Chief Norman Knight of the MIGCFD today at the Fire Rescue Conference today in Myrtle Beach. He wanted to express his department's thanks to all of the members of the CFD who have so generously supported his Captain and his family while he has been hospitalized in Charleston. For those who may not have heard, A MIGCFD Captain suffered a heart attack while fighting an apartment fire last Saturday. Due to the quick action fof his fellow firefighters, he was resuscitated, transported to a Georgtown hospital, and then airlifted to MUSC in Charleston. Chief Knight and his entire department are indebted to all of the CFD members who have continued to stop by the hospital to be sure that the Captain and his family have what they need.

"Run for the 9" a Big Success!

Today, 400 + runners and walkers honored the memory of the Charleston 9 by participating in the "Run for the 9". The Run originated at Joe Riley Stadium and wound through the streets of Charleston before ending back at "The Joe" for a big party. Many of us were in attendance at the Fire-Rescue Conference in Myrtle Beach but cheered the participants on in spirit. Thanks to Nick Daymut and all who worked so hard to make this event a big success!! "Never Forget."

Fourth Annual Memorial to be Held to Honor Charleston 9

On Saturday, June 18th, 2011, the Charleston Fire Department, our families, and our community will come together for the fourth anniversary of the Sofa Super Store Fire that claimed the lives of nine of our brothers. A private service is set to take place at 6:00 p.m. for the Charleston 9 families and CFD personnel.. Chief Tom Carr will read the names of our fallen firefighters and, at the conclusion of the private ceremony, a small orchestra will play and the site will be opened to the public. Fulfilling Its' Mission!

After being on display at the Firefighter Combat Challenge at Citadel Mall, participating in the service for Retired Battalion Chief James Howard, and riding a Columbia firefighter and his bride away from their wedding at Central Station, Engine 11, our flagship, ended a busy week on Memorial Day by being a part of a birthday party for CFD member Matt Thomson's four-year-old twins, Allison and Cameron. We have been asked many times if we were worried about it being damaged with so much activity. We restored it in hopes it would become a part of the lives of our firefighters and their families. We consider the shoe scuffs and scratches as proof that it is fulfilling its' duties and are proud to be able to make it available to our CFD family.

This weekend we are all celebrating Memorial Day in a free country thanks to all the members of our Armed Forces, past and present, who have fought for our freedom. Brent Walters, a Columbia firefighter, and his fiance, Ashley Gainey, visited town recently and expressed an interest in having their wedding in the gazebo at Charleston's Central Station. With the support of Pam Blevins in the Chief's office, we were honored to help make their wish a reality today as they exchanged vows in front of family and a host of new friends from the CFD. After the ceremony and a great reception, they were treated to a ride through downtown Charleston on Engine 11 accompanied by their wedding party. Many thanks to them for allowing us to be a part of this special time as we wish them all the best in the future!

Retired CFD Chief Training Officer James Howard, Sr., 57, passed away yesterday after a brief illness. Chief Howard was a graduate of Bishop England High School and Trident Technical College. Chief Howard was one of the founders of the Fire Department Honor Guard and was also a founding board member for the Carolina Children's Charity and a member of Saints Frederick and Stephens Catholic Mission on Edisto Island. He is survived by his loving wife of twenty seven years, Julie L. Howard of Edisto Island; a daughter, Laura Ashley Howard of Charleston; a son, James Michael Howard, Jr. of Charleston; five siblings, Helen Thomas of Anchorage, AK, Anthony Howard of Central Valley, CA, Stephen Howard of Charleston, SC, Jean Garren of Cottageville, SC and Theresa Cotton of Bryson City, NC. Chief Howard was predeceased by two brothers, Larry and Ralph Howard. The relatives and friends of Chief James M. Howard, Sr., are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Dr. Charleston. Reverend Monsignor Joseph Roth, longtime Chaplain of the South Carolina State Firefighters Association, passed away May 15th after a long illness. Father Roth was a true friend and mentor and provided practical and spiritual guidance to us for many years.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2011 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 503 37th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577. The Most Reverend Robert E. New Life!

Even though our old Engine 11 doesn’t respond to fires any longer, it has been a special part of our Team and our lives now for several years. It has served as a rallying point for us many times, standing as a symbol of hope and recovery for all of us. It has been involved in many exciting and happy occasions, weddings, parades, and other events that have brought many smiles to all around it. It has also been involved in solemn events as well, funerals of friends and loved ones and memorials for our fallen brothers. So, often we have an opportunity to see it be a part of something very special and this week, it did not let us down. It seems that a momma bird decided to take refuge on Engine 11 to have her babies, building a nest in the “skull saver” on its ladder. All three crews at Engine 116 have taken an interest in this new life going on and have been leaving a door open in the station to allow the momma an opportunity to fly in and out of the station in search of food for her offspring. Who said firefighters couldn’t be “softies”? At any rate, Engine 11 is out of service for a while until these little ones can fly from the nest. Thanks guys, for keeping an eye on them.

The Firefighter Combat Challenge Competition is coming to Charleston on May 20 & 21, 2011! The two day event includes elite competitors from around the United States who will compete in events such as the Victim Rescue, the Five Story Tower Climb, the Hose Hoist, Forcible Entry and the Hose Advance. There will be a Kid’s Challenge course and an Expo with a ton of vendors and activities for all. This is the 20^th anniversary of this nationwide series and their first visit to Charleston. "Never Forget" Camaro Heavily Damaged in Wreck!

Sadly, I must report that the "Never Forget" Camaro was heavily damaged in a wreck tonight while competing in a race at Dorchester Dragway. Thankfully, our driver, Doug Livingston, was not injured but the old hot rod is pretty bent up. Doug lost control about halfway through his pass and skidded into the retaining wall. The entire right side and the front end will need to be replaced. I expect we will be out for a while before repairs can be made. Thanks to all who came out tonight to support us. Wish we could have put on a better show.

Fire Museum to Host 4th Annual Bike Rodeo and Safety Fair!

The North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center will be celebrating its fourth anniversary on Saturday, April 30, 2011 with the Annual Safe Kids Bike Rodeo and Safety Day. The Fire Museum opened its doors to the public April 28th, 2007 and since that time has hosted over 110,000 visitors. As a thank you to the community the Fire Museum, in conjunction with the Safe Kids Trident Area, will be hosting a full day of family fun activities aimed at entertaining the entire family while preventing accidental childhood injury. Children will receive a FREE new bike helmet while enjoying the free jump castles, climbing wall, music and water games. Guests will be able to visit over 30 different vendors, watch vehicle extrication demonstrations by the North Charleston Fire Department, the South Carolina Highway Patrol roll over simulator and police bike team exhibitions. Children will also be able to navigate their way through the bicycle obstacle course after receiving a free bike inspection and tune up. Bring your own bike or use one of the free bikes available for check out. Attendees will to be able to cool off in the museum and enjoy FREE admission for the entire family.

The Bike Rodeo runs from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. and the Fire Museum will be open from 10:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. with the last admission at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2011.

Run for the Nine" Set for June 11!

The 2011 "Run For The Nine" will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Joe Riley Stadium, 360 Fishburne Street, Charleston, SC 29403. The event will open at 7:00 a.m. and last until 1:00 p.m. Start time for the run is 8:00 a.m. There will be a party inside Joe Riley Stadium with food, drinks, music & activities, fire trucks and other equipment after the run.

Early registration fees for the run are due by Saturday, June 4th and are $20 for Individual Run/Walk participants and $100 for 5-Person Team participants. After Saturday, June 4th and including race day the entry fee is $25 for Individual Run/Walk participants and $125 for 5-Person Team participants. If you are participating as a 5-Person Team each member must fill out a registration form. After Saturday, June 4th, registration on active.com will close and anyone who wishes to participate in the run that has not signed up by that date, will have to fill out a registration form at the event on the day of the run.

We will be competing with our hot rod in the Top 8 Doorslammers series next weekend, Saturday, April 23, at the Union County Dragway in upstate South Carolina before returning to the Dorchester Dragway on Sunday, April 24 to complete a double header. We invite all of our upstate friends to join us at Union County and our hometown crowd to come see us run at Dorchester. Dorchester Dragway is located between Summerville and St. George on Highway 78. Qualifying will begin around 4:00 p.m. Hope to see you there!

An Exciting Day in the CFD!

Today we celebrated with CFD Recruit Class 10-02 as they graduated after 23 grueling weeks of training and take their places as the newest members of the Charleston Fire Department. They received their badges at the Simons Center Recital Hall on the campus of the College of Charleston before a large crowd of family, friends, and fellow members of the department. Congratulations to Daniel Arthur, George Corrie, William Easterlin, Evan English, Kyle Franklin, Thomas Fulmer, Jamaal Goss, Gregg Hayre, Justin Kroboth, Edward Lloyd, Daniel Mansdorf, John McDonald, Patrick Mulhern, Grey Mumpower, Joseph Rivers Robinson, Brandon Shaw, Casey Sullivan and Paul Tumminia on your accomplishment.

As I stood at the back of the hall and watched the ceremony, I couldn’t help but notice the members of the fire department in attendance that are second and third generation firefighters. Special recognition goes to Edward Lloyd, a new recruit, who was pinned by his father, CFD Assistant Chief Raymond Lloyd. Edward is the fifth generation of his family to be a firefighter! Furthermore, many of the new graduates had their children with them today and I wondered if we were looking at some of the future generation of firefighters. If I could offer any thing personally to the new members of the department, it would be to enjoy this day for it marks the beginning of an exciting time in your lives.

"Dancing the Two Step"

I had the opportunity to drive Engine 11 to a school carnival this morning where we displayed it for the kids and parents alike. When I fired it up, the sound of the old Thermodyne as it cackled to life brought back many good memories of days gone by. As I drove through the streets of Summerville on the way to our show, I enjoyed the old “two step” it takes to coax this old truck through the gears. Quite frankly, it gave me some satisfaction that I can still manage to get it done. You see, the “two step” is a process of double clutching and feathering the gas pedal to get it through the gears. It does takes some hand and foot coordination to get the “dance” down pat. In addition, you must begin to turn the steering wheel well before your turn or you’ll never catch up to that old wheel in time to make it. When we arrived at the carnival, I parked Engine 11 next to a Goose Creek Rural Fire Department engine that was state of the art for today. It was equipped with air conditioning, power steering, automatic transmission and all the other bells and whistles; truly a nice truck. I couldn’t help but wonder what will replace it fifty years from now?

We appreciated the opportunity to share our experiences and to learn from theirs. We were excited to be able to work with these folks and we'll look forward to seeing them all again in the future.

2nd Annual Charleston Bed Race to Benefit Camp Happy Days!

On April 10th, 2011, Camp Happy Days will host the 2nd Annual Charleston Bed Race.This event, while fun for participants and spectators alike, has a serious side. It benefits Camp Happy Days, the year round program for South Carolina’s children with cancer, whose mission is to give children diagnosed with cancer and their families hope and support by providing programs, special events, emotional support and access to crisis resources.

So, jump under the sheets and roll down to Mary Murray Boulevard in Hampton Park on April 10th. At approximately 3:00 p,m., the 2nd Charleston Bed Race will commence on the backside of the park. A grand parade of the racing beds before the judges and spectators will take place before the heats begin. The beds will be judged on the fastest bed, slowest bed, best decorated, most outrageously decorated, the “What were you thinking?” bed, and the People’s Choice Award.

The heats will involve two beds at a time racing a distance of approximately two city blocks, with a challenge to be determined halfway through the course. These heats will continue until they are down to two beds. The fun continues until they have a bed race champion team who will reign for the year. Libations (a.k.a. Beer) and food will be served. The Women Firefighters of the Lowcountry "Sirens" will be fielding a Team so come on out and cheer them on!!

Life Springs Forward!

As we were working at the SSS site today, we heard a faint sound near the flagpole and discovered a Momma bird sitting on a nest of four eggs. She was none too happy about our being there. We stopped work to decide what we needed to do to protect her and the eggs. First, we put stakes around her nest to keep the construction equipment working on the property from disturbing her. We made several phone calls seeking advice on how to take care of her and the folks at the Birds of Prey Aviary near Awendaw agreed to come out and assist in moving her and her babies to a safe location. As we watched her protecting her nest, I couldn’t help but think of how the SSS site has affected all of us in the last four years. It is normally a solemn and sad location where memories of our lost heroes linger. But today, however, this little bird showed us all that life does spring forward as she sought safe refuge there to have her offspring. In a way, it was her tribute to the 9 and I believe they would be pleased.

Improvements Begin at SSS Site

Today we assisted the folks from the City of Charleston’s Parks Department in preparing to start the improvements to the SSS site. We began by removing the original flagpole and nine markers in preparation for hauling in fill dirt and top soil to grade and level the site. New sod will be added along with new shrubbery and benches. The finishing touches will include a walkway into the center of the property along with new markers for each of the nine and a 25 foot illuminated flagpole. This project is the first phase of improvements as we continue to move towards a permanent memorial on the site in the future. It should take about a month to complete this initial project.

CFD Receives Scholarship for Tactics & Strategies Training!

True North is pleased to announce the award of the next True North Firefighter Training Scholarship. After careful review of the many applications submitted by departments from across the USA, the scholarship was awarded to the City of Charleston Fire Department.

The True North Training scholarship will provide $6,000 for training to teach tactics and strategies for engaging commercial "Big Box" fires. True North has partnered with On Scene Training Associates to provide the training. To make sure Charleston firefighters get the greatest benefit from the training, Aaron Heller with On Scene Training spent two days in Charleston with the CFD training officer and other fire department personnel learning about the department's current training curriculum, the tools & equipment they use, and the community they protect.

The training program will be held on April 26 - April 28, 2011 and will involve a day of interactive classroom education and two days of hand-on skills training. “This course will be a great addition to the Charleston Fire Department's training curriculum and will assist them in bringing a unique and innovative program to all of the CFD firefighters. It is always a thrill to know that we have the opportunity to bring realistic hands-on training to a department who has endured so much,” says Aaron Heller from On Scene Training.

Team to Present at Fire-Rescue Conference in Myrtle Beach!

Members of our Team will present two programs during the upcoming Annual South Carolina State Firefighters' Fire-Rescue Conference in Myrtle Beach in June. The first program will be on Thursday, June 9, and will be a Behavioral Health Workshop that will provide participants with an understanding of the potential impact of cumulative stress and the potentially traumatic events to which first responders are frequently exposed. This workshop is specifically tailored to provide participants with techniques to assess issues and build on their existing coping strategies.

The second program, scheduled for Friday, June 10, will a program development session that will address issues facing departments in their attempt to form and/or maintain a Peer Team and establish and maintain access to counseling for their members. The goal of this session is to combine a presentation from the Charleston Firefighter Support Team with a discussion among participants that highlights the successes and challenges they have experienced. In addition, training and support issues will also be addressed.

Four New Members Join Our Team!

They join CFD members Robert Baldwin, George Gardiner, Bill Haigler, Johnny Hackett, Bryan Kleskie, Frank Marker, Pete Salvo, John Poston and John Winn, Sr. as active members of the Peer Team component the Charleston Firefighter Support Team. All of these peers are available to our firefighters and their families for assistance upon request.

CFD Retirees "Hooked Up" Meeting Held Tonight

Our Team finished up a busy day by hosting the CFD Retirees' "Hooked Up" meeting tonight at the Charleston Baptist Church. A & M Brown's Bar-B-Que of Moncks Corner provided a delicious meal enjoyed by all. Battalion Chief Randy Carter of the CFD Training Division presented an interesting and informative program on the Training Division and the Recruit Training Program and brought the retirees up-to-date on the department's progress. All attendees were invited to the next recruit graduation being held on April 15 and the CFD Picnic on June 5. The program was concluded with a drawing and each of the retirees won a door prize provided by local merchants.

CFD Battalion Chief Phil Hawkins Retires

After a great morning at the St. Patrick’s Day parade, I was honored to have lunch with CFD Battalion Chief Phillip Hawkins and friends as we marked “Big Daddy’s” retirement from the department. Much can be said for Phil and I just wanted to take a minute to share my personal feelings about this good man. He and I met many years ago when we were both very young and quite ambitious about our fire service careers. We've faced much together over the years, the heartbreak of losing loved ones and many of our friends, and happier times such as raising our children and the birth of our grandchildren. We have fought many, many fires, both literally and figuratively, celebrated promotions and accomplishments, made a bunch of mistakes, and enjoyed our triumphs. But most importantly, through all of these years, we have remained friends and brothers. I have never been more proud to call someone my brother and I can only hope that all of you experience true brotherhood or sisterhood during your lives. It is not something that just happens; it must be developed and earned. You must pay it forward in order to reap its’ benefits and it cannot be traded or sold. To my brother, Phil, I wish you the very best in your retirement and will continue to look forward to our weekly meetings. Take care of yourself and enjoy your new grandson. We have reached a new time in our lives and I expect we will do well.

St. Patrick's Day in Charleston!

We participated in the annual St. Patrick's Day parade today in downtown Charleston. The weather was wonderful and the crowd was excited as Engine 11 and "Big Red' drove by. Charlie, the Riverdog mascot, rode Engine 11 and was a big hit with the crowd. What a great time of year to be in Charleston! Special thanks to CFD Retiree Winston Lesesne for handling the wheel on Engine 11.

CFD Hockey Team to take on Boston FD Team!!

On Saturday, March 12th (C-Shift), the CFD Hockey Team will take on the Boston Fire Department's Hockey Team at the Carolina Ice Palace, located at 7665 Northwoods Blvd., in North Charleston (next to Northwoods Mall), the puck drops at 6:00 p.m. The CFD is coming off of a thrilling last minute win over FDNY's "A-Squad" and is looking to ride the momentum from that game into this upcoming match with Boston's Bravest. It should prove to be another exciting game, so come out and support our brothers as they look to take down our brothers from "Beantown".

Prior to the game, there will also be an All-You-Can-Eat Pre-Game Party at O'Malley's Bar & Grille at 549 King Street, in Downtown, Charleston from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Tickets to the party are available for $15 and Local 61 has made arrangements for buses to provide FREE transportation from O'Malley's to the hockey game and back.

The "Never Forget" Camaro and "Spitfire", our Team motorcycle, both took top trophies today in the Southern Drag Racing Association's "Camp Happy Days" Car Show in North Charleston. Our hot rod won "Best Paint for a Pro Drag Car" and "Spitfire" won 1st Place in the Motorcycle Cruiser Class. Special thanks go out to all of our friends, Earl, Sarah, Phil, Brian, Shannon and Justin from the St. Andrews Fire Department, Laura from the Awendaw Fire District, Paulette from the St. Paul's Fire Department, Jason, Leigh, and all the family members for their help in making this a special day!

North Charleston firefighters and CCEMS personnel responded to the White Oak Manor today to find fire and heavy smoke conditions. Our hats are off to them for their heroic actions in evacuating all 171 residents without any serious injuries. Great job to all of them!!
